Real skills. Scholarships. A crew that counts on you.

If you’re in high school or college, volunteering with AVFD gets you hands-on training, scholarship and tuition-reimbursement opportunities, and responsibility most people your age never get a shot at.

The Upside

Why ride with us

Scholarships & tuition help

Volunteers can access college scholarships and tuition-reimbursement opportunities through county and state programs.

Skills employers notice

Certifications, leadership, and the ability to stay calm under pressure — experience that stands out on any application.

A head start on a career

Fire and EMS are direct pathways into careers in the fire service, healthcare, and public safety.

A crew, not a club

You train, ride, and eat with the same people — and they count on you to show up. Being needed is the point.

Good Questions

Common questions

How old do I have to be?

You can apply at 16. You can get involved and start learning right away, with more responsibility opening up as you complete training.

Can I do this around classes?

Yes — training runs evenings and weekends, and you sign up for the duty shifts that fit your schedule.

Do I need any experience?

No — all firefighter and EMT training is provided free. Nobody expects you to know anything on day one.

What are the scholarship benefits?

Volunteers can qualify for county and state scholarships and tuition reimbursement — ask us for the current details.
